Preach in the Mountains
Matthew
Great multitudes of people followed Jesus from various places. Seeing this, Jesus went up into a mountain. When he was set, his disciples came up to him. He taught them:
Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn, for they
shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the
earth. Blessed are they who do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for
they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain
mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.
Blessed are they who are persecuted for righteousness' sake,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when men shall revile
you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely,
for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad, for great is your reward in
heaven, for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. .
You have heard that an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. But I say to you that resist not evil, whosoever shall smite you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also. You have heard that you shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy. But I say to you that love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them who persecute you. By that you may be the children of your Father who is in heaven, for he makes his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
Take heed that do not let your alms seen, otherwise you have no reward of your Father in heaven. Therefore when you pray, do not sound a trumpet before them as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. When you do alms, let not your left hand know what your right hand does.
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust does corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal. Take no thought for your life, what you shall eat, or what you shall drink. Nor for your body, what you shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? behold the fowls of the air, for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much better than they? Why you take thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow, they toil not, neither do they spin. But I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
Therefore take no thought for tomorrow, for tomorrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient to the day is the evil thereof.
